Abstract

Objective: This study was performed to be used as basic data and to activate walking exercise by analyzing the study through twelve-week walking program of a rural community and developing an exercise program for health promotion suitable to the actual condition of a community.

Methods: Twelve-week walking program was developed and implemented for the middle-aged and old 67 women in a rural community, and this survey was performed from June 26, 2006 to Sep 2, 2006. Data was analyzed using SPSS 12.0 program and body composition, physical fitness and blood pressure, stress and fatigue were compared before and after the walking through paired t-test.

Results: As for weight in body composition, the average weight was 53.6¡¾7.2 §¸ before walking and 53.2¡¾7.1 §¸ after walking (p£¼0.001). As for Body Mass Index, itwas 24.9¡¾3.9 before and 24.7¡¾3.9 after walking, which significantly decreased (p£¼0.01). As for muscular endurance of physical fitness, the number of it was 9.4¡¾5.8 before and 12.6¡¾6.8 after walking (p£¼0.001). As for flexibility, it was 12.7¡¾6.9 §¯ before and 15.2¡¾6.2 §¯ after walking, which was significantly different (p£¼0.001). As for blood pressure, the systolic blood pressure was 128.0¡¾17.5 §®Hg before and 123.1¡¾16.6 §®Hg after walking, and the diastolic blood pressure was 81.1¡¾11.8 §®Hg before and 77.5¡¾11.9 §®Hg after walking, which significantly dropped (p£¼0.001). As for stress, psychological stress was 11.6¡¾6.5 before and 8.6¡¾6.2 after walking, which significantly dropped, and physical stress was 11.3¡¾6.5 before and 8.6¡¾6.1 after walking, which significantly dropped (p£¼0.001). As for fatigue, it was 98.1¡¾16.5 before and 88.8¡¾13.9 after walking, which significantly dropped (p£¼0.001).

Conclusion: Considering the above results, by implementing twelve week walking program to the middle-aged and old women, it turned out that the program was effective to solve the stress and relieve the fatigue as well as to increase physical fitness. Therefore, in the future, with the studies on the systematic and scientific walking program to increase the physical and psychological health of residents of a community and to lead a healthy life and with the creation of environment and foundation suitable to the walking, it is necessary that we should keep on endeavoring on the plans for activating the walking exercise of a community.
